Violence fears rock suburbia

London police are investigating a second shooting and another fire that may be related to the city's gang war, The Free Press has learned. The shooting and fire are more signs the violence is wider spread than first believed, and have sparked fear in a quiet neighbourhood of middle-class family homes. "We're all pretty scared," a resident said Friday. "The police seem to not be doing anything about it." The man targeted by the second shooting told The Free Press he's not a biker, but has friends in the Outlaws motorcycle gang and FU Crew, both rivals to the Hells Angels. "I'm leaving London as soon as I can," he said. The shooting took place Wednesday morning about a half hour after two people were shot outside a suspected Hells Angels clubhouse on Grey St., and police arrested three people. The Free Press has decided not to name the street or area out of concern for the safety of residents. A resident said he was at home watching television when he heard three or four gunshots about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. "I was sure they were shots. I jumped off the couch immediately, running upstairs yelling to my wife to see if she was OK," said the man, who didn't want to be identified. Only when questioned by The Free Press on Friday did police confirm they're investigating the second shooting. "There was a report of shots fired shortly after the arrest of the three males. Police attended the area but at that time could find no evidence to support this," Insp. Kelly O'Callaghan said in an e-mail. "It was not until (Thursday) that we actually had evidence to support this claim after a citizen came forward, indicating that their vehicle had damage consistent with a bullet hole." The same man targeted by the gunfire said his vehicle was torched in the fall. His garage showed signs of being under repair Friday. Police said they are still investigating both the shooting and fire, and could not say yet if they are connected. For the man targeted by the gunfire, the connections are clear. About the same time his vehicle was torched, a friend who is a member of the FU Crew had his vehicle torched, he said. The fires and shootings erupted because the FU Crew and the Outlaws motorcycle club are pushing back at the Hells Angels' attempt to take over the drug trade in London, multiple sources said. "The Hells Angels have terrorized everyone for 10 years," said one man. No one seems to know where the violence will end, or even, how far back it began. Police held a news conference this week after shootings outside a suspected Hells Angels clubhouse Wednesday morning that followed suspicious fires last weekend at a strip club, massage parlours and a tattoo parlour. The violence was caused by street gangs battling the Hells Angels over the drug trade, and was not a traditional biker war, police said. Sources with connections to street gangs, the Hells Angels and the Outlaws agreed with police the violence wasn't a sign of a traditional biker war. But bikers on both sides are involved and the violence began a long time before last weekend, they said. There have been a series of fires at tattoo parlours, torched vehicles, and tit-for-tat robberies targeting competing criminals dating back to the fall, sources said. Police did not identify what street gang they believe is battling the Hells Angels. Of the seven that police named this week, they said they are most interested in three. At least a half dozen sources have told The Free Press the FU Crew is the main gang battling the Hells Angels, and the street gang has close ties to the Outlaws. "The Outlaws are flexing their muscle. They are behind the FU Crew," said a source. The same source expects the Hells Angels to make a show of force soon, whether it's a large gathering of members or violence. Sources said the label "street gang" doesn't properly describe the FU Crew that's filled not with a handful of teenagers, but dozens of experienced criminals. Late Friday, police announced they had issued a warrant for a fourth man wanted in connection with the Grey St. shooting on charges of possession of a loaded firearm, possession of an unregistered firearm, and occupying a vehicle with a firearm. Three men earlier charged with being in a vehicle with a firearm, have also been charged with possessing an unregistered firearm and a loaded firearm. Police said they didn't release the name of the man they were hunting, in the interests of his safety.
